Imposter Syndrome Explained With Anime.
Abstract:
Imposter syndrome is a real and uncomfortable feeling for many who find themselves in the midst of talented and accomplished people. A syndrome most people are not aware of, yet they experience it through their life with realisation. It has been made visible through many shows, movies, and anime.
Imposter Syndrome In The Fictional World:
Yor forger:
A character from the anime Spy X Family. Yor forger is a pretend wife of Loid forger. In the anime, Yor is interpreted as a the best and successful woman in her field. While, Yor feels that she isn't a good wife or a good mother. Contradictory to that, we can see her taking good care of both her husband and her daughter. She makes ultimate efforts to show her care for both. The feeling that Yor feels is what we now call as Imposter Syndrome. Where she feels that she is not a “normal girl”, “not a good spouse/mother”. But her feelings were never external. It was all internal, in her mind. The shows her Imposter Syndrome in her thoughts yet proved wrong by her actions.
Tomioka Giyu:
He is another example for the interpretation of Imposter Syndrome in the fictional world. From the anime Demon Slayer, Giyu-san is a chosen water hashira. But he deeply feels that he passed due to his luck and his friend who save him and died. He believes that his friend should have been the hashira not him as he hadn't killed a demon in his test. Which is contrary, because through the anime we can see his true strength and capabilities which he thinks are not enough. His Imposter Syndrome and his guilt led him to believe that he didn't deserve the position. In the anime, he is shown as the top five of the strongest hashira.
Conclusion:
Movies, shows, animes are not only purely entertainment. If we had a closer look on the character we admire it shows behavioural pattern and many syndromes like Imposter Syndrome through characters.
Imposter Syndrome is mostly from within and can be reserved to our benefit. If a person feels they might have Imposter Syndrome or any type. It would be better visiting a therapist and talking with your mind to get to the core problem.
